Casa Luz
Casa Luz is a contemporary tropical residence in Eco Villa, San Mateo, Costa Rica. Designed for a young family, the home is organized around a series of interconnected indoor and outdoor living spaces that blur the boundary between architecture and landscape. Deep overhangs, natural materials and carefully framed garden views create a calm environment that responds naturally to climate, place and everyday life.
Residential Architecture • Eco Villa, San Mateo, Costa Rica • Under Construction • 300m²
Casa Luz is conceived as a collection of sheltered pavilions arranged around gardens, terraces and outdoor living spaces. Rather than separating interior and exterior environments, the architecture encourages daily life to extend naturally into the landscape while remaining protected from sun and tropical rainfall.
The material palette combines exposed concrete, warm timber and native planting to create a home that feels grounded and enduring. Simplicity, durability and connection to nature guided every design decision, resulting in a residence that is both contemporary and deeply rooted in its setting.
Design Approach
Located within the Eco Villa community in San Mateo, Casa Luz forms part of a broader vision focused on ecological stewardship and landscape regeneration. The design responds carefully to the site’s existing topography and vegetation, allowing the architecture to sit lightly within its tropical surroundings. The result is a home that embraces Costa Rica’s climate while fostering a deeper connection to nature, family life and place.
In Progress
Now under construction, Casa Luz is steadily taking shape in San Mateo. The project reflects a close collaboration between client, architect and builder, with particular attention given to craftsmanship, material quality and long-term durability. Construction progress continues to reveal the spatial qualities envisioned during the design process, bringing the relationship between architecture, landscape and daily living into focus.
